GALLERY ADDITION Salisbury, NC Study: 2021
Adaptive Reuse is a topic that we have been passionate about since the start. While not every renovation project is a literal example, adaptive reuse comes to the fore when a new typology or use for an existing space introduces dynamics that shift the perception of that space and create new ways of appreciating a blended design. We assert the importance of context, and a reverence for the existing dynamics of an architecture while tethering them to a new and evolved frame of reference for how it serves our needs today.
A glimpse at our design process from organizational 'flow' studies to penultimate render studies testing materiality, cohesion, and spatial harmony, you'll find that adaptive reuse can be a polarizing topic. While some advocate for a 'preservationist' approach in which imitation and replication is prioritized, we tend towards a 'conservationist' lens in which the history and narratives of the original are visibly retained while being critically assessed for appropriate symbiotic additions.
